The Official Home of the Clan McLea - the Highland Livingstones
IN THE PARISHES OF ARDNAMURCHAN, 1800-1854
The following is a letter received from John Le Mesurier of Australia on Jan 19, 2001

I am not a Livingston but do have a connection to the family. Perhaps I can fill in a couple of blanks for you and you may be able to clear up some mysteries for me.
I am descended from a Duncan McLachan who was born 24 March 1841 in Bonhill, Dumbartonshire. Duncan's parents were John McLachlan, born about 1798 in Ardnamurchan and Agnes McMaster. John's parents were Hugh McLachlan and Isobel McMillan, both from Ardnamurchan (I think).
My connection with the Livingstones comes through Duncan McLachlan's elder sister Isabella. Isabella was born 19 August 1826 in Eastwood, Renfrewshire. On 19 May 1849 at Jamestown she married Alexander Livingstone, born about 1818 in Argyllshire. That is as much as I know of his origins. Alexander and Isabella moved to the Maclean district of NSW where they died, Alexander on 18 July 1893 and Isabella on 7 October 1903. I think it is possible that Alexander had a brother named Hugh living at Maclean and there were two John Livingstones and an Angus Livingstone living not far away.
Alexander and Isabella had no children. I think Alexander left all his estate to Isabella and on her death she left most of her estate to her brother Duncan. However, she left various amounts to people named Livingstone.
The photocopying and the flowery writing make some of the place names very hard to decipher): First, Janet Livingstone of Mullumbimby, daughter of Hugh McDermid Livingstone of Mullumbimby (a north coastal NSW town) received £30 sterling. Hugh's second name is hard to read but it might be McDernud. Second, Catherine Mackay of Mary Hill near Glasgow, wife of John Mackay of Kelvindale Paper Mill near Glasgow received £20 sterling. Third, Hugh McDermid (the Livingstone bit is left out), labourer of Mullumbimby received £10 sterling. Fourth, Annie Livingstone of Livander(?) Ardnamurchan, spinster daughter of Archibald Livingstone, received £40 sterling. Fifth, Janet Cameron of Berdalthan(?) St, Tobermory, Argyllshire, wife of Albyn Cameron, farmer, received £40 sterling. Sixth, Mary Graham of Rallabeglam- Caroross Port of Monteith, Perthshire, married woman, daughter of Hugh Livingstone, received £40 sterling.
There were other bequests too but these were to the McLachlan side.
I will be very interested to learn if any of this means something to you.
John in Canberra
PS, just as a matter of intetrest. Both my maternal g-grandfathers became members of Lodge Livingstone at Maclean. I don't know the origin of the name but it was not connected with the Livingstones in the district.
