As our Argyll MacLeas began an apparent, full scale change of their clan name to Livingstone sometime between 1750 and 1775, it is sad to note that the aristocratic Lowland Livingstons of Callendar were at their lowest point in Scottish history. |
James the 5th Earl of Callendar had supported the Jacobites in 1715 and as a result lost his estates and fled to France. He and other lowland Livingstons had particpated at the Battle of Sherriffmuir as did the Macdougalls and their old friends the Maconleas interestingly enough.
His daughter Lady Ann Livingston and her husband the Earl of Kilmarnock supported Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745 and Kilmarnock was beheaded for this act of treason. Lady Ann subsequently left her family estate at Callendar, the last of her ancient family to reside there.
