Title: Who Owned Argyll in the 18th Century

Hi all,

Been away from the forum for awhile , but have some news.  To make a long story short, I was able to access the UK Data Archive which allowed me access to the 1688, 1751, and 1802 Valuation Rolls for Argyll. These Rolls purport to list all landowners in the area and are a treasure of information. The Valuation Rolls contain 337 landowners in 1688, 307 in 1751, and 206 in 1802.

The Rolls list owners by six Divisions:  Lorne, Mid-Argyll, Cowal, Kintyre, Islay , and Mull. The divisions are , in turn, brocken into parishes.

Have only had a brief time to look at the Rolls , but here is the Mclea information.

A.  1688 Roll:
Only one listing: Donald Mclea of Lindsag, Cowal Division, Kilfinan parish. 9 ML (merck land).

B.  1751 Roll
Two listings:
1) Duncan McLea, proprieter, half croft, Bachill, Lorne Division, , Lismore and Appin parish.
2) Alexander MacLea of Lindsaig, 3 ML Cranunichan, 3 ML West Lindsaig, 3 ML Easr Lindsaig & Tayinluig.  Cowal Division, Kilfinan parish.

C.  1802 Roll:
Only one listing: Duncan Macinlea, proprietor, half croft Bachill, Lorne Division, Lismore and Appin parish.

General Observations:
1)  Not much of a Mclea presence left by 1688.
2)  Perhaps the Lindsaig branch should be given a little more emphasis.  The 1743 Account of the Name becomes more credible re this branch.
3)  Why wasn't the Lismore ownership listed in 1688.
4)  Interesting names variations: Mclea, Maclea, Macinlea.

I am trying to find a way to get the Rolls sent to the web site in case you don't have them.

Craig
