In discussing the question of why Baron MAconlea sometime between 1750 and 1770 changed the name of his ancient highland clan from the gaelic Maconlea (MacLea) to Livingstone I have felt in proper to take into account the decline of the aristocratic Lowland Livingstone family in that century. Whether the lowland families demise due to their adherence to the jacobite cause of the old Pretender in 1715 and the subsequent attainting of Sir James and Sir William Livingston by the Hanovers and exile had any impact on Baron Maconlea later decision more than a generation later to adopt the name Livingstone I can only speculate.

After losing his title and  property after supporting the Old Pretender in 1715, Sir William Livingston of Kilsyth spent the remainder of his life exiled in Rome with the Old Pretender James Stuart. One of his sad letters from Rome written in the year 1721 and is copied on-line. I do not know what became of his family and descendants that were living in Scotland, but I am curious.

Sir James Livingston 4th Earl of Callendar, 5th Earl of Linlithgo. suffered much the same fate after backing the losing cause of the Old Pretender in 1715. He subsequently received the same fate as Sir William and his lost his estate at Calledar House and his titles. Of William we know that he had no sons. He apparently fled with the Old PRetender to Rome and died there on April 23, 1725.

James had two daughters. His daughter Ann Livingstone was married to William Boyd the 3rd Earl of Kilmarnock. She and her husband were supporters of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745 and he stayed briefly at Callendar House. The 3rd Earl of Kilmarnock fought at the Battle of Culloden was captured and was executed. Anne died not too long after in 1747. Callendar House was much later in the 1700's acquired by the Forbes family.
