I recently received a question about David Livingstone’s ancestry and the apparent confusion on the clanlivingstone.com website.

There are two references – the first is on http://www.clanlivingstone.com/family_tree.htm which is where I have put the information that we are most comfortable with. This has

DOUGAL MACONLEA, Baron of the Bachuil b. c1680 spouse unknown. Issue included:
1. Duncan, his heir
2. Malcolm
3. Margeret
4. Janet
5. Neil whom, according to tradition in ‘Lismore in Alba’, fought in the 1745 rising, and after Culloden briefly returned to Bachuil, then moved to Morven, Mull, and finally Ulva.  He is probably the father of Neil Livingston who married Mary Morrison in 1774. Their son, Neil b1788 married Agnes Hunter, the father of Dr David Livingstone b1813.

This shows David’s ancestry as:
Dougal Baron of Bachuil b c 1680
>Neil b c 1715 would be 30 at Culloden in 1745
>>??Neil m M Morrison?? married 1774  therefore  Neil  born 1734 - 1754 assume two years after Culloden 1747 - could work!
>>>Neill b 1788 m Agnes Hunter
>>>>David Livingston b 1813

The second reference is to this article which was written by Alexander Carmichael which I haven't edited. - http://www.clanlivingstone.com/the_barons_of_bachuil.htm

“Neil Livingstone, the young son of the old Baron, joined the army of Prince Charlie, and was in the rising of l745. He escaped, but not scathe less, the disasters of Culloden and made his way home to Bachuill. But Lismore was not a safe asylum, being the country of the Campbells, and the parish of the Rev. John MacAulay. This John MacAulay, who had been minister of South Uist, was the grandfather of Lord Macaulay, and like his father in Harris, the Rev. Aulay MacAulay, he made himself obnoxious by trying to secure the Prince.
Neil Livingstone crossed from Lismore to Morven, and after a time from Morven to Mull, and finally from Mull to Ulva, adjoining.
Donald Livingstone, the son of Neil Livingstone, was in the local Fencibles of his day. During the annual drills at Oban and Stirling he made the acquaintance of his namesake and distant kinswoman, Catherine Livingstone, whose father was a farmer at Bailemore in Kerrara, opposite Oban. When his regiment was finally disbanded Donald Livingstone married Catherine Livingstone and brought her home with him to Ulva. Things, however, did not prosper in Ulva with the young people, and after a time they removed to Blantyre on the Clyde. Donald Livingstone had a son, Neil, the father of David Livingstone, whose name will live while courage, honesty, and humanity are admired among men.”

This article indicates David’s ancestry as:
Dougal
>Neil son of the old baron (fought at Culloden??)
>>??Donald m Catherine ?? as opposed to ??Neil m M Morrison??
>>>Neil m Agnes Hunter
>>>>David Livingston

So there is a dispute to David's Grandparents in the two versions.  Carmichael’s work should not be dismissed too lightly.

Kind Regards,

Niall
