Title: Campbell Version of the Black Fleece Story

Alastair Campbell of Airds wrote a three-volume history of the Clan Campbell that was commissioned by the Clan Campbell Education Association. Volume 2 contains a version of "our" black fleece story. So even the Campbells acknowledge the fowl deed, although they call Donald Campbell's plot a "stratagem".
Here's their version:
"Donald's funeral, said to have been at Ardchattan but no identifiable stone survives there, was a grand affair.  During it, a whole cow was consumed, together with two stone of cheese, fifty-two gallons of ale and five gallons and a quart of whisky. Scandal attended him even on his deathbed, where he called repeatedly for MacOnlea or Livingstone, Baron of the Bachuil, whose lands and title derived from his hereditary post as Keeper of the Bachuil or Crozier of St. Columba's contemporary Saint Moluag.  His lands on Lismore had been much diminished by a stratagem of Sir Donald who, having summoned the whole parish to a service in the church of Appin, managed to insinuate the fleece of a prized balck lamb into the Baron's Barn where it was duly 'discovered'.  Faced with hanging for sheep stealing or handing over a large part of his lands, the wretched Baron made the obvious choice.  Now Sir Donald wished to make amends but it was too late and, when he died, his accomplice and servant is said to have hurled himself from the neighbouring cliffs."
