Title: List of Sept Names

Thought I would start this as a new thread.

First may I thank the contributors for their input.  Quite a list David.  I would like to reduce these hundreds into a dozen or so.

My thinking is that there are the obvious variations on Livingstone and McLea:

Livingstone
Livingston
MacLea
McLea
MacLeay
MacClay
Maclae
Mac-an-Leigh
McOnlea

Then we have groups who have changed their names
Boggs
Gorm (MacLea manuscript)

Then we have derivations of Dunsleve
Mac Dhunnshleibhe
MacDonleavy
MacDowleavis
MacDunslave
MacDunslea

I don't think that any of the above are contentious - but I am not sure if the examples I have given are the best.  David could maybe try filtering out the most common variations from his list.

I am not sure how many of the varaitions such as Levidge that Andrew has on his site should go on http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/MacLea%20surnames.htm

Finally there are names such as MacAulay and Mackinlay. The MacAulays have a chief - so we should omit them.  Mackinlay is a different matter.

p126 of Clans Septs and Regiments says that Mackinlay and its various forms comes from 5 different sources - one being the MacLeays or Livingstones.

This makes sense to me : McOnlea => Mackinlay.  So MacKinlay is in.

Any more?

Regards

Niall
