Title: Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs

Dear Kinsmen and Kinswomen,

It is with great pleasure that I can report that today I attended, on behalf of my father, my first meeting of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs in Edinburgh.

It was an interesting two-hour meeting attended by approximately fifty chiefs.  Main topics discussed were the new constitution and a planned Gathering of the Clans in July 2009.

The Gathering is expected to be a big event, with grand displays and fireworks.  A highlight will be a march of the Clans from Holyrood up the Royal Mile to the Castle.  It is anticipated that about 80 clans will take part.  I am minded to add our clan to the participants.

Talks are in an early stage – but it is anticipated that clans will organise smaller events in their own districts immediately following the main event.

If there is an interest then I suggest that we start planning sooner rather than later and try to select a hotel where we could all stay.

Today I was given this address www.yournotme.com and it seems as though there are about 7,800 Livingstone(e)s in the UK and about 3-400 MacLeas of various forms. There are also about 3,000 Mackinlays – some of whom will be McOnleas. Say 9-10,000 in total.

This compares to about 1,000 Skenes, 1,000 MacLarens, 1,000 Haldanes, 3,000 Borthwicks, 4,500 Lamonts, 4,500 Agnews, 4,300 Dewars, 5,000 Brodies, 5,000 MacLachlans, 6,000 McDougalls, 6,000 Carmichaels, 10,000 MacGregors, 20,000 Sinclairs, 30,000 Frasers, 40,000 MacDonalds, 70,000 Stewarts and 82,000 Campbells.

I think these numbers show that we are not as large as some  - we are a great deal larger than others.

At this stage I throw this thread open for idea generation.  I would like to leave the evaluation of any ideas to a distinct later stage.  Often the idea that is obviously stupid turns out to have considerable merit.

With regards to you all,

Niall
