Hello Sir,

Thank-you for your valued insight on this one Baron.Certainly that would be my understanding as well given the ancient origin and history of your family and our people on Lismore. No doubt the old Savary and Barr, Morvern Livingstones have roots in Achnacree and even older roots with your ancestors on the Isle of Lismore. Regretably Duncan Livingstone mentions the Bachuil Livingstone only briefly. After reading Duncan's article I find myself lamenting that he not could tell more of what those old Morvern Livingstones may have known of our ancient past.

Some of the information that Alexander Carmichael and Duncan Livingstone got from the old Livingstones regarding their origins one has to sift through, sort out and determine what is accurate and what is not. I do not find this to be an easy task. As you know as I try to better understand our history the more I find myself sometimes challenging the published Livingstone historians.

On the other hand I realize that one must careful not to ignore the great contribution that historians such as Alexander Carmichael made to the understanding of our Clan's origins. Certainly are clan was ignored by the Clan and Tartan historians of the 19th century or only mentioned in one line as a sept of the Appin Stewarts so Carmichael should given the appreciation he deserves as a pioneer of Livingstone history even if one disagrees with him on a few points.

One thing as you know I find annoying in Livingstone histories is the assumption that Maconlea assumed by some historians as Mac en Leigh translates as son of the doctor. From there there is assertion that were among clan in ancient times a physician or physicians to the Lords of the Isle or some variation of that.

Certainly we know both 19th century historians became aware of the Mac en Leigh son of the doctor translation possibly from an old Argyll Livingstone. The only truth I can garnish out this Argyll Livingstone  myth is that the ancient Barons of Bachuil with their sacred staff were considered by the local folk, Maconleas, MacColls Carmichaels etc.to have the power to heal the sick and performed this function for those on the Isle of Lismore and neighbouring Morvern. There was a old tombstone I understand with a physicians symbol on a Maclea stone, but not in any highland Maclea graveyard to be sure.

Like the ancient Greeks whose tales were preserved by Homer I understand that your Scottish ancestors and mine were great story tellers of family folklore. And like Dr. David Livingstone's grandfather there was quite commonly an old family member who would have knowledge of family history and origins passed on in an oral tradition by the fireside from generation to generation for hundreds of years.

Beginnning with Archibald Campbell in the late 19th century and continuing with the monumental work of Appin Historian K.W. Grant in the 1920's, we are fortunate to have had english speaking Argyll historians who have taken a serious interest in Western Argyll gaelic folklore  and stories regarding the Maconlea Livingstones and made them known to the world. That being said with all so called facts and theories presented by the fine historians regarding Clan Maclea and Livingstones one must sort and sift.

Ultimatetly, I look forward to the day when yourself and the clan publishes a book of our history. Your own historical accounts of your family and the clan and the many contributions of clan members over the years to furthering our knowledge certainly could be the basis for an excellent book I would think.

regards,

your loyal clansman,

Donald
