Title: Lea and Lee in 1841 Scottish Census
Posted by: Donald (Livingstone) Clink

Approximately 39 Leas are listed in the 1841 Scottish Census most of them in the lowlands. Presumingly most are of Scottish origin, but some are of English origin as in the case of those that lived at Erskine in Refrewshire. The name Lee of course is common in England. One Ellace Lea is located at Dunrossness and Fair Island in the Orkneys and Shetland area. There has been speculation that some of the Scottish Leas were descended from McLeas or MacLeas that dropped the Mc or Mac.

On the other hand there were about 507 Lees recorded in the 1841 Scottish Census. Their origins are Scottish, English and Irish and anyone researching their Lee family in Scotland should take this into account.

Donald
