Hi All,

Looking at the some of the MacLay books Kyle MacLea has drawn to our attention I found one of particular interest to MacLays. It is "The Life of Reverend Archibald MacLay" by Isaac Walker Maclay published in 1902. Maclay was an American Baptist minister was born near the village of Killearn in Killearn Parish near Loch Lomond. His son Dr. Archibald Maclay of New York City gave a brief account of the history of Maclays that he learned from an old manuscript in his possession to the author. According to Maclay the original Clan (Maclea,Maclay, Macleay) "was dispersed after the disasterous battle of Bealach Nan Broig sometime prior to 1452 and subsequently became septs or dependents of the clan Stewarts of Appin."

The author also cites a Reverend William Arthur who was a friend of the Maclays and father of President Chester Arthur who had been told that Maclay was gaelic for son of clay, clay being a lake on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. This seems an unlikely origin of the name, but the Isle of Lewis reference is interesting knowing as we do that there were a branch of Macleas, Macleays or Maclays in this area of Scotland which may have been connected to a group of Macleas  dispersed from the Appin area by the Stewarts of Appin in the 1400's. The minister's family in the 1700's were residing near Loch Lomond in Killearn Parish and no doubt it would be interesting to learn more the MacLays that lived in this area and what there connection is to other Macleas Macleays etc. Thanks again Kyle for finding the Maclea books.

regards,

Donald
