Hi All I am posting the resulting response from the Beaton Institute for my inquiry about Colin Livingstone, in Whycocomagh. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Good morning Mr. Judson: I have searched through our holdings and only found one mention of a Colin Livingstone in our holdings. In the 1861 census for the Whycocomagh area there was a Colin Livingston. However, it was not spelt Colin Livingstone but as "Collen Livingston". Unfortunately, these census only provide the name of the head of household and the number of males and females who reside in the residence. Therefore, the information we could obtain from this census was that Collen was head of household and there were four males and three females in the home. It does not provide any additional information. There were also two other Livingston families listed in this census for this area, Alexander Livingston (5 males and 2 females) and Malcolm Livingston (1 male and 5 females). The 1871 census in the area of Whycocomagh listed one Livingston, Alexander who was 56 at that time. These census also listed the names of the other members of the house. These were Anne (45), Catherine (27), Duncan (25) John (23), Dougall (20), James (16), Donald (7), and another name that was not legible. The 1881 census listed two Livingston families in Whycocomagh: 1. Duncan Livingston (35), Catherine (35), Alexander (9), Donald (7), John (5), M John (2), and Ann (under 1). Duncan is listed as being a farmer and miller. This Livingston family were all listed as having Nova Scotia as their birthplace. 2. Alex Livingston (67), Annie (50), John (32), Cathy (34), and Donald (17). Alex's occupation is listed as farmer. Alex, John, Cathy and Donald were all born in Nova Scotia. Annie was born in PEI. There was no listing for Livingstone in the 1838-1841 census. I looked through our biography and genealogy card index and there was no listing for Livingstone. I also looked at our land grant maps for the area of Whycocomagh and again there was no land grant for a Livingstone/Livingston found here either. You may want to join the Cape Breton Mailing List ( http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nscbgha ), where you can post your inquiry and there are several hundred excellent researchers available to help. There is a researcher listed on this website for Livingston. The link to this page is http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nscbgha/SURNAMES-L.htm . This mailing list is free to join. I hope this information will be of some help in your search. All the best, Krista Smith Student Archival Researcher Beaton Institute Cape Breton University P.O. His family matches with my family her on PEI, with 4 males and 3 females. Does the Collen name show up on anyone's lists? Thanks Barry |
