My quest is this: to find out the origin of my surname, “Levack”. The normal result of any query is “affiliated to the Stewarts of Appin and the Livingstons”. What is not so forthcoming is,- how? The Levack name appears in Caithness records from about the mid 1600s. I have recently read more of the Maclea and Livingston history in relation to the Stewarts of Appin. I started wondering if there was a connection. Maclea is the anglicised form of the Gaelic name which is pronounced (in phonetic English) “Vachc-Lay”. In Caithness the name Levack was pronounced in recent history, (again phonetically), Lay-Vach or Lay-Vack. When the first Levacks appeared in Caithness in the 1600s, perhaps the mixing with the non-Gaelic speaking Caithnessians caused this reversal of the name MacLea? Or was it a deliberate attempt to disguise the name? I do appreciate that the name is also found in Aberdeenshire but the majority seem to be Caithness related. This maybe completely off the mark but you will understand my efforts to try and understand the undisputed connection among these names. I have traced in detail my family tree, (which throws up a few stories of its own), back to my g-g-g-grandfather, Alexander Levack, born in Caithness in the 1700s. Probably the most historically famous of the name was Helen Levack from Caithness. She married William Mowatt when he returned to Caithness after the Battle of Waterloo. They emigrated in 1815 from North Scotland to Canada and their son Oliver was the first Prime Minister of Ontario. The mine and town of Levack in Canada was named after her. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
