Title: Origin of the name Levack

Iím sorry I havenít added anything since my previous mails Ė between work and family I seem to have no spare time for hobby interests. I hope to add a few snippets now.

My DNA: I posted back my samples Thursday 3rd Nov.

I was going to look into MacLea(y) history in the county of Caithness: I got as far starting by looking in the Highlands and Islands telephone book which covers the area north and west of a line drawn roughly from Inverness down to the Ardnamurchan peninsula across from Mull. I found no MacLeas, but 35 MacLeays, spread evenly over this area, with the most northerly being in Lairg, county of Sutherland.

One very interesting discovery to me, however, was that the famous Australian politician / naturalist Sir Alexander Macleay was from Wick in Caithness.† His father was the Provost of Wick.† They lived in a splendid old house which I have passed many times in the countryside outside Wick. (See website Caithness.org) Several streets in Wick are named after either him or his father. (MacLeay Street, MacLeay Lane.)† Another interesting point, which I havenít followed up, one website had Alexander as being born in the county of Ross.† Had the family a Ross-shire connection?

Thatís as far as Iíve got Iím afraid.

Dawn, in reply to your query, I think any connection with France and the Levacks is simply people guessing that, because of how the name is spelt and pronounced now, it sounds French with the ďLeĒ bit. I think that this is just coincidental.† The first Levacks seem to appear in Caithness in the early to mid 1600s Ė† before the French revolution. I wouldnít dismiss anything out of hand though.
I can be contacted on aleclevack@yahoo.co.uk and I can send you a PDF of my family tree. It doesnít include the name you mentioned but Iím sure there will be a connection somewhere.

I was very interested in the stories of the fighting in Ross-shire in the middle ages. Living where I do, I would like to pinpoint the area where these battles took place. (Bealach-na-Broig posting.) Dingwall library has suddenly gained renewed interest from me Ė if I can get time!

If anybody needs anything checked or researched from a present day north Highlands perspective please feel free to contact me Ė my mother (a Maclean from North Uist) and my father-in-Law (a MacKillop from Harris) are both native Gaelic speakers and could help with pronounciation queries etc.

Regards,

Alec
